What to Include in a Manufacturing Drawing Package
What a reviewer looks for in a manufacturing drawing package, and which fields should stay blank until the responsible engineer specifies them.
A drawing package is a controlled description
A manufacturing enquiry is only as clear as the package behind it. In U.S. practice, engineering drawing requirements are commonly organized under the ASME Y14 series. ASME Y14.100 covers engineering drawing practices, and ASME Y14.5 covers dimensioning and tolerancing. Confirm which revision, if any, applies to your drawing. This page does not reproduce those standards and is not a substitute for them.
Ironvale does not assign tolerances, materials, or weld criteria that your package leaves open. Those are decisions for the responsible engineer or the buyer specification.
Minimum contents that prevent a false start
Include the identification block, units, revision history, and the views or model needed to understand the part. Call out material only if it has been specified. If material is still open, mark it open. The same rule applies to finish, edge condition, and any inspection note.
- Title, part number, revision, and units
- Views or a model that define geometry, with the controlling file identified
- Material, if known, written as a specification rather than a trade nickname
- Dimensions the buyer considers critical, identified as such
- General tolerance note only if your standard actually states one
- Surface finish, coating, or weld symbols only where a requirement exists
- Quantity and whether left- and right-hand versions are both required
Welds, codes, and certificates
If a welded assembly must follow a structural welding code, the buyer should say so. AWS D1.1 is a widely used structural welding code for steel, but it is not automatically the right code for every metal or product. Applicability is an engineering decision. A website cannot make it.
Do not expect a material certificate, weld map, or inspection report unless the enquiry asks for it and the selected route can provide it. Ironvale does not publish a quality certification.
File hygiene
Send one current revision. Name files with the part number and revision. A screenshot can illustrate a question, but it is a poor controlling document. Native CAD or a PDF plot is easier to review. STEP files are useful as geometry references when you also state whether the drawing or the model governs.
Checklist
- Current revision only, with superseded files removed
- Units and drawing standard named if one applies
- Material left blank or marked open when it is not decided
- Critical dimensions identified by the buyer
- No assumed weld code, coating, or certificate
- Model and drawing disagreement resolved in writing
- Permission confirmed before proprietary files are uploaded
